35 Years of Star Wars
When I first saw the LUCASFILM presentation at the 1976 San Diego Comic Con, my relationship with Beth Hart began. The Hollywood Bowl orchestra was astonishing when I saw Star Wars in concert, more than a live orchestral event. The use of the green split laser fanning over the entire bowl had the crowd gasping. Peter Mayhew, Kenny Baker, David Prowse, Maria de Aragon, Jeremy Bulloch, and many other Star Wars actors I have gotten to know very well over the years. I was fighting a cold and fever during the show, but I refused to leave early - this was a sold-out event with many families present, three generations of fans. Anthony Daniels's narration was charming, witty, and very much in his C3PO character, to the chagrin of the Concert Master. A 35-year tribute to a film that had a profound impact on my life, Star Wars in concert was. The only thing missing was fireworks, which would have been perfect if they had been timed to go off after the Death Star film montage. Stems came out in the spring of 1977 and featured an interview with Peter Kuran, who did the laser light saber effects for A New Hope. There I also met Howard Chaykin, the first Star War poster artist, and who also did a sketch for my Fanzine Stems.
